Star Wars and Cameras

To say I’m a Star Wars fan would be somewhat of an understatement. I’m 41 and can’t remember a time when Star Wars wasn’t a constant influence on my life. Even through the gaps between the original trilogy and the prequels, then the prequels and the sequels, it has always been there. So you can understand why my upcoming visit to Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is weighing pretty heavily on me. Not in a bad way, but from a creative perspective. You see, I’m a chronic gear over-packer. So I’m taking this opportunity to cut my travel kit down to the absolute bare minimum.

I’ve set up a single rig so I can take photos, cinematic B roll, and vlog. Let’s check it out.

I’m using a Fujifilm X-T30 with the XF18-55mm f/2.8-4. With the latest firmware taking care of that pesky Q button issue I can finally use this thing for video on the road. Adding a variable ND filter means I can keep a 90 degree shutter angle in the bright California sun. That takes care of photos and B-roll.

I’ve mounted a rear facing GoPro Hero 7 with an ND filter for vlogging. The stabilization of the Hero 7 is outstanding and the ND filter will help me keep the footage looking somewhat professional under the bright suns of Black Spire Outpost. There will also be a Manfrotto Pocket Tripod, Gorillapods and selfie sticks are banned at Disneyland

I’m sure this sounds like too much gear to most people. It probably is. I could get by with my smartphone, but I know I’d be disappointed with the final results.

There’s also part of me that thinks I should ditch the camera gear all together. I should just enjoy myself and take it all in. I know that creating content when I travel enriches the experience for me so not bringing anything is simply not an option.
